First Aid Attendants and Medics

Medics Defined

Phoenix Medics

Phoenix medics have the required Oil and Gas training. (H2S, PST, TDG, WHMIS and advanced driving skills) as well as specific training from phoenix; Occupational Health and Safety and new employee orientations. Phoenix will provide medics with any training requested by the prime contractor.

Phoenix Paramedics are fully qualified medics, some have or are working towards higher levels of training. Many work with BC/Alberta, or other Ambulance Service or other emergency response organizations such as Search and Rescue, Fire Departments, and alike. This is how they maintain their skills and licensing requirements to ensure operational readiness.

Our Medics are able to provide other services on site to assist you with health and safety. They conducted site orientations for visitors, safety sign-ins and general safety tasks, personal protective equipment enforcement, ensuring all visitors and contractors have the correct qualifications and tickets, perform hazard assessments, conduct site safety tours to identify hazardous conditions enabling you to take a proactive approach to your safety program.

Medical Direction

The use of medics in industry has been done for years but it is just now becoming a more common requirement or request by prime contractors. Many first aid companies are new to providing this level of service and may not have a medical director or proper equipment for their medics. It must be understood that all medics/paramedics and anyone using an AED (Automatic External defibrillator) must work under the direction of a medical director. These levels of service also requires a substantial amount of advance equipment.

Phoenix medics work within their scope of practice under the direction of our Medical Director. We have advanced protocols that include; pain management, cardiac arrest, diabetic shock and anaphylaxis. When using our Paramedic services our MTC’s are stocked according to those medical directives.

Phoenix uses the services of Dr. Allan Holmes. He is a fellowship trained Emergency Physician. He promote the use of AEDs in the community and proceeded to implement some of the first AED programs in British Columbia. Currently Allan continues to develop innovative educational programs while overseeing a number of complex health services projects both within Canada and on an international basis.

Allan was instrumental in designing and implementing a successful program tailored to meet the needs of exploration companies doing business in Canada. In order to provide services to these geographically remote areas, Allan leads the medical team providing 24/7 telemedicine support for paramedics working in isolated oil and gas camps in Northeastern B.C. Specific to this area of the business,

Level of Care

People in the field providing first aid services are often referred to as “Medics.” This is a misleading term. Not all people providing first aid services are medics. A further confusing point is there are different names for different training levels in various provinces.

First Aid Attendants

The basic level of care is a first aid attendant. Their training ranges from a basic first aid to advanced first aid. These people work under their own direction.

In BC the levels are:  1, 2 and 3 OFA (Occupational First Aid)

In Alberta the levels are Emergency, Standard and Advanced First Aid. The advanced first aid is equivalent to Level 3 OFA.

Medics

First it must be understood that all medics/paramedics and anyone using an AED (Automatic External defibrillator) must work under the direction of a medical director. (I don’t see any info regarding our medical director. This needs to be stated.)

All medic/paramedics must be licensed in the province they are working in. Often medics trained in one jurisdiction can write an equivalence exam and become licensed in additional jurisdictions.

Medic range in their training from a basic level– BLS Basic Life Support to ALS – advanced Life Support. There are a number of levels of advanced training and their names differ from province to province.

The first level of training for a medic is the EMR Emergency Medical Responder.  It is the same name in both BC and Alberta but their training differ slightly so they need to be licensed in each province they work in.

After the EMR, the levels of training and their names vary widely in different provinces. These are described below specific to each province.

Each province establishes their minimum level of care required at job sites. Often employers request advanced levels of training to better protect their workers. Phoenix will work with the prime contractor to identify their needs and provide the necessary levels of trained attendants, medics, equipment, transportation, communications and medical direction.

Paramedics

Phoenixs Paramedics are fully qualified medics. Some have or are working towards higher levels of training. Many work with BC/Alberta, or other Ambulance Service or other emergency response organizations such as Search and Rescue, Fire Departments, and alike. This is how they manage to keep their skills up to date and operational ready to respond.

All employees are provided with specific Oil and Gas and OH&S training. They also have advanced driver training skills. Our medics will take any training that you require.

Our Paramedics work within their scope of practice as a Paramedic under the direction of our Medical Director.
